Basic information about machining

Have you ever wondered how machining works or even what it is? Simply put, it is a variety of processes in which raw material is cut and shaped in a controlled environment.

Over the last 200 years, with the increase in technology, the meaning of the term has matured. During an earlier era, traditional processes such as boring, milling, boring, sawing, and reaming were used to name a few.

Traditional processes used tools like drill presses, lathes, or milling machines to get the job done. This, combined with sharp tools, are used to break down the material for a desired geometric finish.

Machining is primarily the manufacture of metal products, however, it is not limited to just metal. It can also be used with other materials such as plastic, wood, composites and ceramics.

A machinist works in his workshop today with new technology. Electrochemistry, electron beam, electrical discharge, ultrasonic, and photochemistry are some of the newer technologies.

Working with these materials in this way is mostly done through a business, but it can also be a hobby. Many people use this technique to support or maintain their income on a regular basis.

Today, it is mostly done by what is known as “computer numerical control” or CNC. The operation and movements of lathes, milling machines and other machines used for cutting are controlled by computers.

There are three basic processes: milling, drilling, and turning. Miscellaneous processes include planning, shaping, broaching, drilling, and sawing.

– Milling. Milling is accomplished when a cutting tool rotates so that the cutting edges come very close to the material.

– Perforation. In drilling, holes are produced and sharpened with a cutter, which rotates with cutting edges. The lowest position of the hole contacts the material. Drill presses are generally used for these procedures, but they can be done on mills or lathes.

– Spinning. Turning procedures turn material as a method of moving metal against the cutting tool. Lathes are generally used in turning.

– Various methods. There are also some miscellaneous machining methods. Honing is a method that can be operated on a drill, mill, or lathe. Chips, fine metal shavings, removed by a cutting tool are not produced in the burning process.

Commercialized machining is usually done in a machine shop, which has numerous shops complete with various cutting tools. These stores may be privately owned or operated within a large company.

This cutting process demands attention to detail. Each item must meet certain specifications, which are drawn from plans or drawings established by the designer.

Machining is a singular part of a much larger manufacturing process. The material of choice starts with a design and then continues through the manufacturing process. This process is used to shape materials, or it can be used on its own as a finishing method. Whatever its use, it is a necessary and fantastic method to create useful objects for everyday utility.
