Exploring the New England Coast by Sailboat

Of the six states that make up our country’s picturesque New England, five are on the coast, making the area a prime location for water sports, including a favorite, sailing.

Whether you make your home there or decide to soak up the sea air on your next vacation, you’ll never run out of ways to enjoy the water as you navigate these unique waters.

The coast itself is markedly different from others further south on the Atlantic; here you will find rugged cliffs, white beaches and rocky beaches mixed with cracked shells. Because New England is a relatively small area, you’ll also enjoy the “sea to city” scenery; you can sail off the coast of New England or one of its islands and still see the city lights blinking at you.

For exceptional sailing opportunities, you can always find a “sailboat race” or regatta, and you can join the competition or get a good seat for the perfect view from land.

Some of the best known beaches, such as Cape Cod in Massachusetts and its glamorous “little sister”, Martha’s Vineyard, attract thousands of tourists each year to enjoy the high cliffs, dunes and white sands. The other great advantage of sailing in New England is that you can easily “skip the waters” to another state and enjoy great sailing on Maine’s 100 miles of beaches, including Cape Elizabeth and the New Hampshire coast. And if you’re looking for a bit of privacy, there are several “off the beaten track” less “touristy” beaches and islands to drop anchor on. One is Block Island, off the coast of Rhode Island.

You can choose to take a leisurely cruise along the coast on a guided tour, or take the helm yourself and “bareboat sail” all day at your own pace. And don’t forget to try the famous fresh New England lobster; Bring the champagne and cook it on board for a festive afternoon of sailing while watching for whales and other native wildlife. Lighthouses also dot the shoreline, making for a romantic sight from your vantage point at sea.

So start your next sailing adventure where American history began – you’re guaranteed to see, hear, feel, smell and taste some of the most sensual sensations ever!
