Riad Vs Hotel: What is the difference?

When you travel to Morocco, there are usually two different types of places you can stay. One place you can stay is a riad and the other place you can stay is a hotel. Many people would like to know what the differences are between a hotel and a riad. Although there are many similarities, there are also some important differences.

The name “riad” in Arabic means “house with a tree or garden”. This word has adapted to the world as the name of a place to stay. Riads are often found in the middle of a traditional city, where people and shops are within walking distance. The riads are made up of old, spacious and traditional houses that have been restored. Therefore, the walls are covered with traditional handmade tiles that are intricately joined together, creating a beautiful sight. In addition, there is the traditional plasterwork and cabinetry and as its name indicates, there is a garden in the center. In most riads there are between 8 and 20 rooms, but in larger riads there are more. The rooms are decorated in a traditional Moroccan style and have a private bathroom. Depending on the rating of the riad, whether it is 3, 4 or 5 stars, it could have a swimming pool and air conditioning. The advantages of staying in a riad are the charming atmosphere and the food, which is carefully prepared in the Moroccan kitchen and tastes just like in a Moroccan home. The downsides of staying in a riad would be that sometimes you would have to walk a short distance to and from the riad and depending on the riad it might not be as modern as you would like. 5 star riads are always very comfortable and anyone should be perfectly satisfied during their stay there.

There are some important differences between hotels in Morocco and riads in Morocco. In general the hotels are located in the New Town, which means that they are in the most modern part of Morocco. Unlike the riad, you can always drive to your hotel. The hotels are big and most of the good hotels have swimming pools and air conditioning. The rooms are decorated in a more European style and are very comfortable. Most likely, hotels are also decorated in Moroccan decor, as are lobbies and other hotel rooms. Meals served in hotels can be more western, so if you want to sample the best of Moroccan cuisine, you should go to a riad. The perks of staying in a hotel are the amenities, you’ll always be fresh, well taken care of, and have all the little things of home. The disadvantages are that you will not have the full and authentic experience of staying in Morocco.

Morocco is a wonderful place to vacation as it offers a lot of variety and things to do. Whether you choose to stay in a riad or a hotel, you are sure to enjoy your stay!
