Some great hidden San Diego restaurants, according to a Boston restaurant critic

So it looks like another weekend of heavy rain in Boston.
This is, what, the seventh or eighth consecutive rainy weekend? I
I love Boston, but this is ridiculous.

In the rain my San Diego, CA dreams seem
It keeps popping up more and more (call it California
dreaming). The other night I was listening to some great rock
Encinitas Internet radio station. It made me think
over Encinitas, where my cousins lived before
moved up the coast to La Costa.

One of my favorite restaurants in Encinitas is the 101 Diner.
Located about 4 blocks from my favorite beach in the world.
(Moonlight Beach), the 101 Diner has it all from excellent
Incoming breakfasts and lunches to outdoor seating for a friendly,
all kinds of good kind of landlord. Almost as good and fair
down the street is Kim’s restaurant, which has an excellent
Vietnamese food. Better yet, none of these restaurants are
well known (if you have looked at the site I founded,
Hidden Boston restaurants, would you know I have a
something for big restaurants that haven’t been discovered).

Heading south to San Diego, another memorable goal
little known, the restaurant can be found in beautiful
Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Pipes Cafe is a breakfast place that
mostly frequented by surfers and Cardiff residents looking for
being late for work (Trevor Hoffman, the great
San Diego Padres reliever, he’s also a regular here.)
Pipes has fantastic breakfast dishes, and the dining room
Outdoors on the patio is a must.

As you continue down the coast, you come to the artistic Solana.
Playa, home of Fidel’s, which is quite well known, and for
good reason; Fidel’s may be the best Mexican restaurant
north of San Diego (although I have my personal favorite,
which I’ll mention in a minute). Fidel’s is difficult to find, since
it’s tucked away in a neighborhood far from the ocean, but
worth looking for.

Just before you get to San Diego, you arrive in La Jolla, a Tony
community that seems to have more investment venues
than restaurants. I like La Jolla, however, with its spectacular
downtown park on the cliffs of the ocean, and its strait,
crooked rails. Just south of downtown La Jolla there is a little
restaurant called Bahía Don Bravo. The owners of this
Authentic Mexican restaurant has some branches in San
Diego, but this one is special, since you can order the food.
go and walk a few blocks down a side street to one of the
the most spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean that you can
have I ever seen. And there is even a bench where the view is, so
you can eat in relative comfort. Bahía Don Bravo has the type
of Mexican food that you just can’t find in Boston. I always go
there when you travel to San Diego, and you always miss it when
I went back to Boston.

Finally, you come to the wonderful city of San Diego. Where
go for food? Well there are too many cool places to
mention here. A couple of standouts are Point Loma
Seafood, with its memorable view of the city across the
Harbor, and the Coyote Cafe in Old Town. But my favorite is
a little burger joint on Ocean Beach called Hodad’s,
which is where i had the best cheeseburger i ever had
anywhere in the country (and I’ve had many
cheeseburgers!). Juicy, thick, hearty, and smothered
cheese, the burgers here are unbelievably good. Hodad’s is
truly amazing.

Well I guess my dream of eating through San
Diego is about to finish. As I look out the window and see the
Boston skyline, I realize I live in a big city. only me
I wish it didn’t rain so much.
