The Yankees go crazy for home runs

The Yankees avoided a sweep by the Cleveland Indians by winning at home, 6-3, hitting four home runs. Yankees fans must be very nervous as it takes four home runs and barely 5 innings from Mike Mussina to get the job done.

I don’t like the way the Yankees are playing inconsistent baseball, and even when they win, it feels like walking on shaky ground. The Yankees hit four home runs against the Indians, courtesy of Robinson Cano, Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon and Wilson Betemit.

The true fan will look inside the game and realize what’s going on. At 18-18, the Yankees sit at .500, an average team thus far. The fact that it’s the Yankee brand means nothing, as we’ve seen in recent MLB seasons. Four home runs is an aberration.

When home runs don’t hit on too many nights, Mike Mussina’s 5-inning, 3-earned performance won’t have much of a chance to hold up. Mussina made it 5-3, but his 4.36 ERA isn’t worth getting excited about. Mussina won for the fourth time in a row, which is positive.

Hideki Matsui continued his wicked hitting, his average now at .345, a 17-game hitting streak at the crease. Jason Giambi’s average is paltry at .163, the same for Robinson Cano at .172. There are injuries in the squad, that’s for sure. The excuses, however, ring hollow.

The Detroit Tigers are next, and their offense isn’t playing. The Yankees pitching better be ready.
