9 Basic Components in a Pre-Employment Background Check

Today, many organizations are conducting all kinds of pre-employment background checks. However, as this is still a fairly new industry in most of the world, many still have no idea what a pre-employment background check is all about. In this article, I will outline some of the common pre-employment assessment components along with a brief description:

1. Criminal Background Check: Check if the candidate for the position has committed any crimes in the past.
2. Civil Litigation Record Check: Check to see if the candidate for the position has been sued in any civil cases.
3. Reference Check: Talk to previous supervisors to learn more about the candidate’s job performance.
4. Employment Verification: Check with Human Resources for details of past employment history.
5. Education Verification: Check whether the certificate, diploma, degree, and professional designation list on the resume is true or not.
6. Bankruptcy Background Check: Check to see if he or she has filed for bankruptcy in the past.
7. Credit History Report – View the credit history report to assess the candidate’s current financial status. You can see if he or she had a history of defaulting on loans.
8. Address Registration Verification: Check if he or she is a director of a competing company.
9. Media Search – Check if the name of the job candidate appears in the media.

Different positions or industries require different levels of due diligence. Pick and choose the components that fit your pre-employment background check process.
