Copywriting Tips: How to Land Your First Copywriting Job

Today, I am going to share with you some copywriting tips and how to start your own copywriting business. This article will show you how to land your first copywriting job and clients as a new copywriter. I personally followed the steps below to land my first writing job.

Tip #1: Write for friends for free

At first, I wrote the first works for free. So I did 2 jobs for friends for free. I wrote advertising for them, including website, email copy, and print ads. Through this, I gained copywriting experience, writing experience, and references. The question is how did I get paid? How did I get my first job? The answer to these questions will continue in the following writing advice.

Tip #2: Join writing forums and identify successful copywriters

I joined an internet copywriting forum with many different copywriters discussing different topics and helping people who came and asked for copywriting advice. In this forum I identified a successful copywriter and built a relationship with him.

Tip #3: Contact Successful Copywriters

Next, I contacted this successful copywriter and pitched to him via email. I told him I’m a new copywriter, I’m new to the business, and I’m looking for a job. I said if he was ever overworked then maybe he could send me some work and I could help him. Other than that, I got a reply from him within a couple of days telling me he had some extra jobs, but he wasn’t sure of my ability. I wanted to see my bag first.

Tip #4: Showcase Your Copywriting Portfolio – Land Copywriting Jobs

Now remember, I was just starting out in the copywriting business. He didn’t have a huge copywriting portfolio, but he did have two copywriting samples that he had done for friends, for free. So I sent in my samples and he was impressed!

Tip #5: Prove yourself

Before you decide to send me the paper, you want me to tell you my thoughts on something you’ve recently written. As a successful copywriter, asking me, a total beginner, to analyze his work and ask for my thoughts on improving his work was very intimidating. This is the right time to demonstrate his skill and experience. I shared a couple of things that I thought he might change, like the headline and a new opening sentence for the sales letter. In the end, he was actually very impressed and felt me ​​work right away. In literally two weeks he sent me two painful clients as referrals who offered me paid copywriting jobs. Those jobs were worth thousands of dollars.

Tip #6: Find More Copywriting Jobs Online

As my career took off and my confidence grew, I was able to use different strategies and not just rely on other successful copywriters as my primary source for clients. Start participating in some of those online marketing forums or writing forums that you can find by going to Google and typing in “writing forum.” Once you go to those forums, you can now identify the real people who seem very active as writers. Now, what you can find are some copywriters who would be happy to give you work, but they can take a percentage. This is standard and this is customary.

So that’s what I recommend you do. Go there and find a copywriter who seems to be doing pretty well. Get in touch with them and simply start a referral relationship. And you never know in the future when you’re overloaded with copywriting jobs, you might as well be the one to send work to other copywriters. Because there are more clients that we could all work for. There will never be a shortage of advertising writing no matter what kind of economy you are in and that is what I recommend you do.
