How to find a great medical spa

Medical spas, also known as medspas and medi-spas, have a results-oriented “medical” approach, as well as providing the relaxing and pampering atmosphere found in “day spas.” Medical spas offer non- or minimally invasive medical aesthetic services for people looking to improve themselves without surgery or extended downtime.

Many medical spas offer treatments like medical grade facial peels, Botox injections and dermal fillers (ie Restylane), laser hair removal, etc. in a more luxurious environment than that of a plastic or cosmetic surgeon’s office. Additionally, medical spa prices may be less expensive than receiving the same services at a doctor’s office.

With the ease of making an appointment, the wide availability of medical services, and the potentially lower cost of treatments, medical spas are a great option for many people. However, it is very important to “do your homework” and select a reputable medical spa to ensure that you receive safe and effective treatments. The following are some questions to ask in a consultation and general tips for finding a great medical spa.

Who is the medical director?

Medical spas must be supervised by an appropriately qualified physician, that is, those who specialize in aesthetic or skin related fields, such as a cosmetic or plastic surgeon or dermatologist.

Where is the main doctor’s office?

Does the doctor have an office nearby or is it located in another city? If the doctor is not around, it is a warning sign; see the following questions.

Is the doctor available to see me at the spa to answer questions or to examine me if there is a complication?

It is important to note that procedures such as injections (Botox, fillers, and the like), laser hair removal, certain facial peels, etc., are medical procedures that should be performed by a well-trained physician with the same care and diligence that you would find in a doctor’s or surgeon’s office. If there is a complication, the doctor must be available to assess the situation.

Does the doctor have normal hours at the spa?

Knowing that the doctor is available certain days of the week at the medical spa for consultations and evaluations is tremendously important. This ensures that the doctor plays an active role in the medical spa and is available to see her if she requests it.

Did the medical director personally train the doctors working at the spa?

The medical director’s personal training of a physician indicates that he promotes uniformity in the treatment of patients to ensure the best results. It also allows the medical director to evaluate the physician and provide additional training as needed.

One final note, being comfortable in the environment is also important. Does the medical spa look clean and well cared for? Is the staff open to answer your questions and/or find answers for you?

Congratulations! Once you’ve found a great medical spa, great treatments (and results) await you!
