Massage Therapy Fan Stroke – How To Do It

It is important that when you are looking to perform massage therapy on another person, you learn the correct movements and techniques that are required of your hands. In several different articles, I will explain how you should correctly perform the different massage hand movements. In this particular article we explain the steps you must follow to correctly perform the fan technique.

This particular movement compared to the others is very gentle and will prepare the muscles being treated with a much deeper massage later on. Here are the steps you need to take to carry out this move effectively.

Step 1: Kneel beside or straddle the person to be massaged. It is important that they are lying on their front (facing the floor) in a position that they feel comfortable with.

Step 2: Now place the palms of each hand on either side of the person’s spine in a position just above where the hips meet. Then you should apply very light pressure with both hands on each side of the body next to the spine. However, it is important that you never apply pressure directly to the person’s spine. Now very slowly bring your hands forward along your back until you reach your shoulder blades.

Step 3: When you reach the shoulder blades, you need to move your hands in a curve so that they actually slide over the shoulder blades and over the shoulders. Once on the shoulder blades, you now begin to move your hands down the sides of the person’s body where the rib cage is until you return to the position in which you originally started.

Step 4: The above steps should be repeated several times, each time applying a little more pressure as the movement continues. Also, make sure your fingers are always pointing in the same direction. That is, they should point towards the back of the head of the person receiving massage therapy.

Also, when performing the fan stroke during a massage therapy session it is important that you apply pressure to the body with your whole hand. However, most of the pressure they should feel should be as you move up their body from the hips should come from the base of your hand and then from the fingers when you return to the starting position. Also, it is important that you try to keep this movement as smooth as possible, and when you first learn about massage therapy, this is one of the best hand movements to learn first.
