It is very important to ensure that your Wi-Fi network at home remains secure. There are some simple and easy steps you can do to make your wifi safe and secure.
Open the configuration page of the router-
Go to your web browser and type “192.168.1.1” to access it. From there, enter your own username and password in the designated boxes and hit enter. You can find your username and password in your router’s user manual. Some routers also have their manual available on Google.
Create a Unique Password-
Create a new, unique and personalized password for your router that no one can guess. Do not keep a generic or default password for your wifi router. Also, don’t forget to change your password every few months.
Change the name of the network SSID-
Changing your NETWORK SSID name would help as it will help others to know that it is not a default network and could be safe. Don’t keep your last names, phone numbers, or addresses as your SSID names.
Network Encryption-
This is an important task. There are a multitude of ciphers out there. On newer routers, WPA2 is the most secure and WEP is the least secure. Choose your encryption accordingly.
PC Mac Address Filtering
A Mac address is an address built into your device’s network equipment. It is similar to an IP address, except that it cannot be changed. For added protection, you can add Mac addresses of all your devices to your Wi-Fi network. To do that, find the Mac addresses of your devices. On the PC, use the command prompt and type “ipconfig /all”. You will see your Mac address next to the name ‘Physical Address’. On your phone, you will find your Mac address in the network settings. Simply add these Mac addresses to your Wi-Fi router’s administrative settings. Now only these devices will be able to access your Wi-Fi.
Reducing the Range of your Wifi
The easiest way to do this is to put the router under the bed in a shoe box or wrap the antennas with aluminum foil. Similarly, you can also change the mode of your wifi router to 802.11g instead of any other mode.
Update your Wi-Fi software
This is also important as with new updates you also get new security updates for your router. Check your current firmware version by visiting “192.168.1.1” and checking it in the admin settings or dashboard.
