Most people don’t think about how easy it is to use someone’s own weight and momentum against them when they try to attack you. By using certain jujitsu throws, I can show you how to take care of business. This isn’t rocket science, but there are some important techniques that need to be followed to get the most out of what I’m telling you.

The first fundamental to grasp is the idea of ​​proper posture. Being in the right position is so important that I can tell you from my own experience. Keep your legs apart and good posture. You cannot unbalance an opponent when you are unbalanced yourself. That’s why with jujitsu throws you can take on much bigger opponents. It’s not always the biggest guy who wins, but the one who uses the best technique and practices it well.

You see, throwing is all about balance and leverage. And using momentum against your opponent. By getting into the correct position, usually lower than the person you are facing, you put them at a disadvantage. By keeping them off balance and reacting to what you do, you make them do what you want. Just imagine when someone runs towards you at full speed; you can use that momentum to start a throw. Remember to use your hips and get under the other guy when you throw anything.

I know these simple principles work because I have used them before. I remember a drunk guy attacking me from across the room. That was his mistake. I was able to grab his outstretched arm and twist with the weight of his body. I got my hips under him and he went straight to the ground. I was able to use my own center of gravity to disrupt his and knocked him down with ease. After that, it was all over.

So practice getting into proper posture by keeping your hips centered under your torso and your head straight. Always keep your head straight. Remember that your body will follow your head and you cannot fight someone when looking down. When you move, make sure you move in a circular direction to keep your opponent guessing. If you’re standing still, it’s almost impossible to get any kind of rhythm or any kind of momentum on your own. So keep your feet moving, but make sure you don’t cross them. Keep your feet apart when you move. If you don’t, you could trip over your own feet. That’s no way to throw anyone with any kind of power or precision.
