5 mistakes to avoid when planning a baby shower

Baby showers are happy occasions that celebrate the arrival of a child. Here are 5 mistakes to avoid when planning your shower.

Mistake #1: Inviting too many guests

Coming from a large family, I know firsthand that a “small” family gathering can turn into a big event in the blink of an eye. I understand that you don’t want to offend or alienate anyone, but think about this: who is this event for? The mom-to-be, of course! When creating the guest list, ask the following question: How well does Mom know this person?

Mistake #2: Going over budget

Budgets are guidelines and are not set in stone. So I’m talking about going WAY over budget. It’s so easy to get carried away with all the cute decorations, favors, games, gifts, etc. However, you can create a beautiful shower without breaking the bank.

Mistake #3 – Creating a “Mish Mash”

It can be easy to create a baby shower hodgepodge by going overboard. For example, Judy planned a shower for her daughter. She decided on a teddy bear theme with blue colors (for a boy). For each of her 40 guests she ordered candles, bath salts and chocolate shower gifts. Only the chocolates actually had blue teddy bears. Having 3 completely unrelated favors seemed like he couldn’t make up his mind. Favors are supposed to be tokens of appreciation, not outright gifts.

Mistake #4 – Not enough food

There is nothing worse than attending any event and there is not enough food. Can you imagine a room full of grumpy and hungry guests? Who wants to attend that shower? Always err on the side of having too much food. You can always freeze leftovers for Mom to reheat after the baby is born.

Mistake #5: Serving Food Pregnant Women Can’t Eat

Keep Mom’s dietary requirements in mind when planning your shower. Can you imagine attending a party in your honor and not being able to enjoy the food? Search the Internet for specific examples.

Avoid these mistakes and you’ll be well on your way to planning a beautiful shower.
