Barriers to rapid manufacturing

Rapid Manufacturing (RM) has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. It is the production of finished products with the help of chemical addition manufacturing techniques. The RM is quickly finding its use in many industries such as entertainment, sports, jewelry, and the military. Growth in the field of rapid manufacturing has its own set of difficulties just like any other technology that hinders the rapid growth process of a process or breakthrough.

RM uses different materials for additive manufacturing depending on their mechanical, thermal or visual properties. The cost of these materials for additive systems is very high compared to other materials. There may be a cost reduction in the price of these materials with increasing demand or rate of consumption, which will be possible when RM becomes more popular.

So, the Rapid Manufacturing process cannot produce parts of more than one meter in length, which is a limitation for companies in heavy industry and construction. Another obstruction in the RM process is the removal of support materials used in the design of the process. Removing these materials may not be a problem for small models, but it arises for parts with statistically different shapes and sizes.

The materials used in RM have properties that change over time and are only suitable for prototyping. The use of these materials in manufacturing can be disadvantageous as the products, once manufactured, can become deformed once a used material changes its properties over a period of time. Therefore, it is required to type the material before using it in the manufacturing process. Then the process also involves the cost estimation of the machine involved in the whole process from the beginning to the end.

The most important obstacle can be considered as the application of Rapid Manufacturing (RM) in the processes used by various companies. Management should initiate its use to make it a widespread technique as it is in limited use today and may increase only when people start using it for their development.
