World Cup fever has taken the world by storm and a topic of great controversy is the South African vuvuzelas which have nearly drowned out crowds at every stadium. Longhorns are selling out in whatever shop sells them and the drone noise that was once unique to South Africa is spreading like wildfire.

Despite being little more than cheap plastic molded tubes, they are flying off the shelves at ridiculous prices. If you fancy being part of the atmospheric drone but don’t like the price, there are other ways to create that authentic vuvuzela tune.

If you’re feeling creative, you can easily make your own vuvuzela with a few simple household items at a fraction of the price. One of the cheapest options is to gather around 10 toilet paper roll tubes, an A4 sheet of thin cardstock, some aluminum foil, and lots of tape.

Cut each of the tubes lengthwise and roll the first one into a thin cone shape with the smaller end around half the original circumference and secure with a strip of masking tape. Do this with each tube gradually widening each time and connect them all together to form a long, tapered tapered tube, similar to the shape of a vuvuzela, interestingly enough. Using the A4 sheet of cardstock, fold it in on itself to create a large cone with an angle of around 45 degrees or more, cut the center to match the wider end of the toilet paper roll tubes. Secure it to the tubes with tape and you’re done. You can protect your vuvuzela from the elements with more tape, aluminum foil, or whatever else is lying around the house.

Some people don’t like noise that much and if you’re not looking for unwanted attention, there is another way to make the noise; you will need a globe and some hex nuts. Insert several small hex nuts inside a balloon and inflate it to a decent size, tie off the end and start moving the balloon in a circular motion to spin the nuts. The contact between the metal and the rubber will create a noise similar to that of vuvuzelas but when everyone turns to see who to hit, there is no horn in your hand!
