Cable log witness: roles and responsibility

The registration witness has a job that encompasses a number of responsibilities:

  • Coordination of all felling activities related to the well: before work, during work and after work
  • Training of any new service company registration engineer on specific customer requirements
  • Interface with the Logging Engineer, Operations Geologist, Well Engineer, and Drilling Superintendents
  • Pre-work, during-work and post-work reports of targets and log operations
  • Participation and supervision of cable logging operations on the platform

Once the service company is on the next job and a registration team is selected, a telephone witness is also reported to cover the job. The log witness is sent to the wireline log program and reported by the operating company geologist or well engineer.

The registration witness is considered the team leader of the registration service project consisting of the service company registration engineer, his team, and the drilling superintendents on the rig. On board the rig, initial interactions should take place between the logging witness, the drilling superintendents, and the logging engineer, obtaining consent on the following topics:

  • Logging program and objectives
  • What tools are required and what tools are available
  • Review and discuss risk assessments and potential security issues.
  • Preliminary details of the logging plan, including the expected start date and time
  • Lessons learned from previous wells

The felling crew has to check all their equipment to make sure that all the felling tools are in working condition and that no equipment needed for the job is missing. The engineer of record should report any missing tool or equipment problems to the wiring witness and drilling superintendents on the rig. At this point, the logging program could be refined through discussions between the operating company and the service company, with the logging witness assuming an advisory role. Logging time estimates, log submissions, and pre-job well information sheets are also prepared before work begins. Any discrepancies in the forecast from the estimated logging time should be highlighted to the drilling superintendent to aid in future planning and logistics. When work begins, the cable witness has responsibilities that include:

  • Logging company data acquisition: supervision and quality control
  • Formatting and / or reformatting of data
  • Downhole Sample Measurement Monitoring – Training and Core Testing
  • Daily job reports
  • Continuous assessment of occupational risks
