Causes of Buttock (Buttock) Pain

There are several causes of buttocks or buttock pain, depending on what you’re talking about.

Pain in the buttocks/buttock muscle – Do you have pain in the large muscle of your buttocks while sitting, standing, walking, or during sex or other physical exercise? If you press the center of your butt muscle, does it hurt more? How about during the massage when you get rubbed hard in that area? Do you just jump off the pain table? Does the pain radiate down one or both legs? Is it sharp, dull, burning, or painful all the time? Does it prevent you from sleeping? Is it colic? All of these could be describing butt pain caused by the sciatic nerve.

What is the sciatic nerve? – The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that exits the spine in the lower back, passes through the gluteal muscle, and down the legs. It can easily be aggravated by stress. When you’re stressed, your muscles become tighter and pinch that nerve, causing all sorts of symptoms and generally making your life pretty miserable.

Lower back/buttock pain – The lower back and buttocks are closely connected, so often if you have pain in one area, you will also have pain in the other. The sciatic nerve runs through both the lower back and the buttock. Some people have pain only in the lower back, others only in the buttock or only one buttock, some people have pain in the lower back that radiates from one buttock down the leg. All of these describe a typical sciatic nerve problem.

pain in your anus (or ass) – This is more than likely hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are veins in or just outside the anus that swell, harden, and become very tender. Sometimes you can even see hemorrhoids if you point your butt towards a mirror, lean over, and open your buttocks. They may look like little round purple balls (that’s the vein) or they may be red and swollen. (Google ‘hemorrhoids’ and select images). Hemorrhoids are caused by sitting (truckers often get them) constipation (straining while trying to poop will create hemorrhoids over time) pregnancy can cause hemorrhoids due to constipation and pressure from the growing baby and dehydration. Chronic dehydration is one of the main causes of constipation and therefore hemorrhoids. You should drink at least 2 quarts of water each day. Coffee, tea and soft drinks do not count. You can get Preparation H at your local pharmacy, which will give you temporary relief from itching, burning, and swelling. But to really get rid of them, you need to add more water to your diet and more fiber. I like to drink 2-3 quarts of water a day PLUS eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I no longer have hemorrhoids due to these changes. If you think it’s hemorrhoids, but they don’t go away after a couple of weeks of hydrating and curing your constipation, see your doctor. PS: the bathroom is NOT a library. Don’t sit there for hours and read, that’s one of the main causes of hemorrhoids.

Pain or burning in the upper part of the butt crack – If you have pain, redness, itching, burning and/or minor bleeding in the upper part of the butt crack, you could have a pilonidal cyst.

From Wikipedia:Pilonidal cysts are quite painful, affect men more often than women, and usually occur between the ages of 15 and 24. Although they are usually found near the tailbone, the condition can also affect the belly button, armpit, or penis.

These cysts often contract bacterial or fungal infections. If you want to try treating it yourself, get an over-the-counter antibacterial cream and treat twice a day after you shower. If you still have the problem after a couple of weeks, you may want to see your doctor. I know, embarrassing. I once had to go to the doctor for extremely painful hemorrhoids.
