Social Media Skills: Typing Speed Test

Being more efficient with social media is a topic everywhere these days. Let’s go back to the basics when you started writing. Maybe it was on a typewriter? I know mine was, until I got my first computer, the Macintosh LC II “pizza box” computer, around 1992, and hooked up with AOL.

I remember typing classes in middle school through high school, learning about home keys and proper posture while sitting at a keyboard/workstation. I still try to practice these good habits on a daily basis, but unfortunately sometimes it’s just easier to be lazy and slouch or look at the keyboard when you type.

Efficiency of social networks

The ability to get work done with minimal expenditure of time and effort is a tall order at times on social media, and content creation is a big part of the role. I found that taking a daily typing test has improved my key entry speed by 20% in the last 2 weeks.

From Keybr:

Keybr.com is very simple. You can choose from three basic lessons that start with a certain number of keys on the keyboard and then as you progress through the lessons, more keys are thrown into the mix to make things a little more difficult. As a bonus, our software keeps track of all your mistakes and your words per minute (wpm), and even graphs your daily performance.

How does Keybr.com work?

Unlike much of the typing training software available, Keybr.com doesn’t force you to type random characters over and over again; that is just boring and contributes very little to their learning. Instead, Keybr.com generates readable random words using the phonetic rules of your native language. These words seem almost natural, and often they really are. Typing sensitive text is much easier than typing random letters and helps you remember common key combinations. For example, it is almost impossible for the letter ‘W’ to follow ‘Z’ in English, and you will never type this combination on Keybr.com. Instead, you’ll write more common words, such as “the”, “it”, “with”, etc. Keybr.com allows you to enter as few keys as possible in the lesson, adding more keys later when you feel you are proficient and fast enough at the current level. So if you start with keys from the Caps Lock row, then add keys from the Tab row, and then from the Shift row, you’ll eventually end up typing actual text with capital letters and punctuation.

Keybr.com is web-based software that runs directly in your browser. You don’t have to download or install anything! The latest and most up-to-date version is always with you. You can use it from any computer connected to the Internet, and your typing statistics are kept on the website and available upon request.

My favorite part of Keybr.com is the ability to import content from a website or blog into Keybr.com for writing.

Give it a try and let me know if you have any other typing speed hacks or favorite tools to share.
