When you buy a property, it is either on a freehold or leasehold basis. A freehold means that you own the property outright, whereas a leasehold allows you to own it for a certain period of time, depending on the terms of your lease.

It’s a good idea to look at the Title Deeds of your property and check how many years are left on your lease. This information is available to you at the Land Registry for a small fee (PS7), or you can ask your estate agent about it.

You should always be aware that the value of a leasehold property decreases dramatically if there is less than 80 years left on the lease. This is known as a “short leasehold” and mortgage providers are less likely to offer financing on properties with short leases.
