2012 is the summer of Skywalks at Niagara Falls

2012 has definitely turned out to be a very successful year for Niagara Falls in Canada. Who knew that a centuries-old tradition would be popular again in an instant? Niagara Falls is known worldwide for its reckless background, but the stories are 100 years old! My friends, a new wire walking revival has begun and this summer it is going to become tightrope history.

Nik Wallenda of the famous ‘The Flying Wallenda’s’ family pushed the boundaries by receiving permission from both the American and Canadian sides of the border to cross the infamous Horseshoe Falls. On June 15, Nik performed the feat while everyone was watching. The night was magical. It was hot; the mist from the falls was thick and unpredictable. People came early to get a good view; there was no empty spot in the park. The sky was clear and there was a reverent calm on both sides of the Niagara River. Everyone was there to see the man who would dare to walk over Niagara Falls.

Nik was victorious. The world cheered. Being in the crowd that night felt like we were a big family that had come to support a friend. Complete strangers high-fives or slapped each other on the back. Shouts of congratulations were heard from both countries. It is certainly a night that I will never forget.

In the immediate aftermath of that event is Jay Cochrane, famous for his 50 years of wire walking. The challenge: walk from the two tallest buildings in Niagara Falls; the Skylon Tower and the Hilton Hotel – DAILY!

Jay will try to break another world record this year for the most walks done at an event! At each event, Jay works diligently to raise funds for local children’s organizations. After the hike, you can find Jay surrounded as he signs autographs and answers questions.

The event is aptly called the Summer of Skywalks. The world continues to watch the fascination for tightrope walking continue with our 3-month event, aptly named Summer of Skywalks. We can’t get enough! In fact, when you walk the sidewalks of Niagara Falls, make sure you look up, you never know what’s going on there!

One thing is for sure, this year is the year to be at Niagara Falls and it is fast becoming the best stay for 2012. If you are looking for natural wonders, great attractions, delicious food, Niagara will not disappoint. You don’t have to be a daredevil to visit.

Skywalks summer lasts until the end of September, so if you want to be a part of history and create your own memory for a lifetime, you need to pack your bags and visit. We are waiting.
